Who is Dr. Jignesh Gala?
Dr. Jignesh Gala is a fellowship-trained vitreoretinal and cataract surgeon and the founder of Crystal Clear Eye Clinic, practising at Laram Centre, SV Road, Andheri West. He leads with credentials few retina specialists in the area can match β FRCS (Glasgow) and over 25,780 eye procedures performed.
His qualifications include MBBS (Grant Medical College & Sir J.J. Hospital, Mumbai), DOMS (Seth G.S. Medical College & KEM Hospital), a dual fellowship at L V Prasad Eye Institute (Comprehensive Ophthalmology, then Medical & Surgical Retina), and the international qualifications MRCS (Edinburgh) and FICO (London), with further experience in Singapore. He is a Life Member of the All India Ophthalmological Society (AIOS) and the Vitreo Retinal Society of India (VRSI).
Continuity of care matters in AMD. Because wet AMD needs ongoing injections and monitoring, it helps that the same surgeon who diagnoses you also gives your injections and tracks your OCT scans over time β no rotating juniors. Add a dedicated retina fellowship, modern imaging, and consultations in English, Hindi, Gujarati and Marathi. Read his full profile and credentials or his background on drjigneshgalaeye.com.

What is ARMD (age-related macular degeneration)?
The macula is the small central part of the retina that gives you sharp, detailed, straight-ahead vision β the part you use to read, drive and recognise faces. Think of the retina as the film in a camera and the macula as the high-resolution centre of that film. In ARMD, this central area gradually wears out with age.
There are two forms. Dry AMD is the common, slow type, where tiny yellow deposits called drusen build up and the central cells thin out over years. Wet (neovascular) AMD is less common but more aggressive: fragile new blood vessels grow under the macula and leak fluid or blood, causing sudden distortion or loss of central vision. Crucially, AMD affects only the centre of vision β it does not cause complete blindness, as the surrounding (peripheral) vision is preserved.
AMD is a leading cause of irreversible central vision loss in people over 60 worldwide, and prevalence rises sharply with age. Anti-VEGF injection therapy has transformed outcomes β guideline reviews in the ophthalmic literature describe it as the first-line treatment for wet AMD, while large trials show AREDS2 nutritional supplements can slow progression of intermediate dry AMD.

When should you see Dr. Jignesh Gala?
See a retina specialist promptly if you notice any of these β especially if they come on suddenly:
- Straight lines looking wavy, bent or broken (a key wet-AMD sign)
- A blurred, smudged or dark patch in the centre of your vision
- Difficulty reading, or recognising faces, despite glasses
- Colours appearing less vivid, or needing much brighter light
- A sudden change in central vision in one eye
Sudden distortion or a new dark spot in the centre of vision can mean wet AMD, where prompt anti-VEGF treatment offers the best chance of preserving sight. Same-day urgent slots are available. A simple Amsler grid at home β checking each eye for wavy or missing lines β helps catch changes early. Patients reach the SV Road clinic easily from Lokhandwala, DN Nagar, Oshiwara and Four Bungalows. Call +91 77188 85245 and book an appointment.
Routine macula checks also make sense if you are over 60, smoke, have a family history of AMD, or have noticed any change while covering one eye at a time.

Advanced diagnosis at Crystal Clear Eye Clinic
Diagnosing AMD is quick, painless and usually completed in a single visit: consultation β dilated macular examination β OCT imaging β diagnosis and plan.
The clinic on SV Road β serving patients from Versova, Oshiwara and Four Bungalows β relies especially on Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT and OCT-Angiography), the cornerstone of AMD care. OCT shows the macula in cross-section in microns, revealing drusen, fluid and new vessels, and is used to decide when an injection is needed and to track response over time. The work-up also includes a dilated fundus examination, fundus photography, and fundus fluorescein angiography (FFA) when leakage needs mapping. Explore the full range of retina services in Andheri.

ARMD treatment options by Dr. Jignesh Gala
Treatment is matched to the type and stage of AMD. The goal is to protect and stabilise central vision β and in many wet-AMD cases, to recover some of what was lost.
Dry AMD β supplements, monitoring & lifestyle
There is no injection for most dry AMD, but progression can be slowed. For intermediate dry AMD, an AREDS2-formula supplement is often advised, alongside not smoking, a Mediterranean-style diet rich in leafy greens and fish, blood-pressure control and UV protection. Regular OCT monitoring and home Amsler-grid checks help catch any conversion to wet AMD early. These measures are supported by Cochrane evidence on antioxidant supplementation.
Wet AMD β anti-VEGF injections
The standard, evidence-based treatment for wet AMD is intravitreal anti-VEGF injection β medicines such as ranibizumab, aflibercept, bevacizumab or faricimab that switch off the leaky new vessels. Given as a quick out-patient procedure under anaesthetic drops, they reduce fluid and help preserve, and often improve, vision. Most patients begin with a series of monthly injections, then move to a personalised “treat-and-extend” schedule guided by OCT. Long-term real-world data confirm the durability of this approach β see this large registry analysis of anti-VEGF outcomes. Learn more about vitreoretinal & medical retina care.
Laser & other options
In selected cases, photodynamic therapy or laser may have a role, and any associated retinal problems (such as diabetic changes β see diabetic retinopathy treatment) are managed together. Cost, insurance & financing in Mumbai
Much of AMD care is covered by health and Mediclaim policies, subject to your policy terms. For injections, the medicine (anti-VEGF drug) is usually the main cost driver, and wet AMD often needs repeat injections over time. Pricing at the clinic is transparent, with no hidden charges, and EMI options are available.
| AMD-related procedure | Typical cost factor (indicative, 2026) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Intravitreal anti-VEGF injection | Driven by the drug chosen | Wet AMD; often repeated; coverage varies by policy |
| OCT scan / monitoring | Modest per-visit cost | Repeated to guide treatment |
| Fundus fluorescein angiography (FFA) | One-off diagnostic cost | When leakage needs mapping |
| AREDS2 supplements (dry AMD) | Over-the-counter monthly cost | Not a medical procedure |
The clinic supports cashless through two routes so every patient is covered: direct (network) cashless via Topax Eye Care, and third-party (TPA) cashless via Crystal Clear Eye Clinic.
