If you are searching Google for the best cataract specialist in Mumbai, you are likely staring at a cloudy, yellowed world that gets a little dimmer every month. Reading has become a strain, night driving is a glare-filled nightmare, and your spectacles keep getting stronger without helping. You are not alone — cataract is the leading cause of reversible blindness in India, and over 5 million new cataract cases are added to the Indian healthcare system every year. The good news is that modern cataract surgery is one of the safest, most successful procedures in all of medicine — provided it is performed by the right surgeon, on the right equipment, in the right clinic.

I am Dr. Jignesh M. Gala, Consultant Ophthalmologist & Eye Surgeon, FRCS (Glasgow) and MRCS (Edinburgh), practicing at Crystal Clear Eye Clinic, Laram Centre, SV Road, Andheri West, Mumbai. Over the last decade I have personally performed 4,000+ cataract surgeries using phacoemulsification, including complex and premium-IOL cases that other centres declined to operate. This blog is the resource I wish every patient had read before walking into my clinic — honest, evidence-based, locally relevant, and free of marketing fluff.

Dr. Jignesh M. Gala, FRCS (Glasgow), Consultant Ophthalmologist & Eye Surgeon at Crystal Clear Eye Clinic, Laram Centre, SV Road, Andheri West, Mumbai.

1. Who Is Dr. Jignesh Gala?

I am Dr. Jignesh M. Gala, a Consultant Ophthalmologist & Eye Surgeon super-specialised in cataract surgery (phacoemulsification & premium IOLs), vitreoretinal surgery, LASIK and ROP. I currently practice at Crystal Clear Eye Clinic, Laram Centre, SV Road, Andheri West, Mumbai, and serve as a Visiting Vitreoretinal Consultant at Jagjivan Ram Railway Hospital, Mumbai. Previously, I worked as an Assistant Professor at TNMC & BYL Nair Hospital, Mumbai (2019–2020), where I trained the next generation of eye surgeons.

My surgical training is unusual — even by Mumbai’s standards. After my MBBS at Grant Medical College & Sir J.J. Group of Hospitals, Mumbai (2006–2012), I completed my DOMS at Seth G.S. Medical College & KEM Hospital, Mumbai (2014–2016). I then earned the FICO (International Council of Ophthalmology, London, 2016) and the Refraction Certificate (United Kingdom, 2017), followed by the prestigious MRCS (Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, 2019) and FRCS (Ophthalmology) from the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Glasgow, 2019 — the highest international surgical qualification in ophthalmology.

I then spent three years at L V Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad — India’s #1 ranked eye hospital — first as a Fellow in Comprehensive Ophthalmology (2016–2018) and then as a Fellow in Medical & Surgical Retina (2018–2019). My ROP (Retinopathy of Prematurity) training was under the legendary Dr. Subhadra Jalali and Dr. Komal Agarwal at the Jasti V Ramanamma Children’s Eye Care Centre, LVPEI. I also trained as an International Observer / Resident Physician at Tan Tock Seng Hospital, Singapore, exposing me to international surgical protocols.

Technology at Crystal Clear Eye Clinic

I operate with the Bausch + Lomb Stellaris Phacoemulsification System and the Alcon LEGION Phaco Platform — two of the most advanced phaco platforms available globally. The clinic is also equipped with the SCHWIND AMARIS Excimer Laser (Germany) for bladeless LASIK & SMILE, CSO Sirius+ Scheimpflug Tomographer for corneal mapping, Retikare Zeal Vitrectomy System for retina surgery, OCT-Angiography (OCTA), Goldmann Applanation Tonometry, IOL Master / Biometry, YAG Laser, Green Laser (Retinal Photocoagulation), and Zeiss / Appasamy Automated Perimetry.

2. What Is a Cataract?

A cataract is a clouding of the natural lens inside your eye — the same lens that focuses light onto your retina, just like a camera lens. In a healthy eye, this lens is crystal clear. As we age, the proteins inside the lens slowly clump together, turning the lens cloudy, yellow, brown or even milky-white. Light can no longer pass through cleanly, so vision becomes blurred, dim, glare-sensitive and increasingly colour-washed — like looking through a dirty window that gets dirtier every month.

To use a simpler analogy: think of your eye as a camera. The cornea is the front lens, the iris is the aperture, the retina is the film (or sensor), and the natural lens is the zoom lens inside. When that zoom lens gets foggy, no amount of new glasses, eye drops, or eye exercises will clear the picture. The only permanent solution is to remove the cloudy lens and replace it with a clear, artificial intraocular lens (IOL) — which is exactly what modern cataract surgery does.

Did You Know?

  • Cataract is responsible for ~51% of world blindness, according to the World Health Organization.
  • In India, over 5 million new cataract cases are added every year; Mumbai alone adds several hundred thousand.
  • By age 60, more than half of Indians have some degree of cataract; by 75, almost everyone does.
  • Modern phacoemulsification takes only 10–15 minutes, is performed under drops (no injection), and most patients see clearly within 24 hours.

Cataracts are not all the same. The nuclear sclerotic cataract (the common “brown cataract” of aging) gradually turns the centre of the lens yellow and hard. The cortical cataract produces white spoke-like opacities that cause disabling glare. The posterior subcapsular cataract (PSC) sits right at the back of the lens and disproportionately affects reading and night driving — it is also the type that hits diabetics and steroid users hardest. Finally, a mature or hypermature cataract is one that has gone completely white or liquid — these need urgent surgery because they can cause glaucoma or inflammation.

According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) Patient Resource on Cataracts, age-related cataract is a progressive disease and surgical removal remains the only effective treatment. A landmark review in The Lancet on Global Eye Health places cataract surgery among the most cost-effective interventions in all of modern medicine — restoring vision at a fraction of the cost of treating chronic blindness.

3. When Should You See Dr. Jignesh Gala?

Cataracts develop slowly, and many patients ignore the early signs until their daily life is significantly affected. The earlier you see a cataract specialist, the safer and quicker your surgery tends to be. Below is a checklist of symptoms — if you tick three or more, it is time to book a consultation at Crystal Clear Eye Clinic on SV Road, Andheri West.

Symptoms Checklist

  • Blurry, foggy or “smudged” vision that glasses cannot fully correct.
  • Increasing glare from headlights, streetlights or sunlight — especially while driving at night.
  • Colours appear faded, yellowed or washed out.
  • Frequent spectacle prescription changes — every few months instead of every few years.
  • Double vision in one eye (even with glasses on).
  • Needing brighter light to read, cook or thread a needle.
  • A “halo” around lights, particularly at night.
  • Loss of contrast sensitivity — stair edges become hard to see, white-on-white text becomes hard to read.
  • Sudden worsening of vision in a diabetic or long-term steroid user.
  • A visible white or grey spot in the pupil (a sign of a mature cataract).

Urgent Notice — Red Flags

Schedule a same-day consultation if you experience:

  • Sudden, painless loss of vision in one eye — could indicate retinal detachment.
  • Sudden shower of new floaters or flashes of light — sign of retinal tear.
  • Sudden severe eye pain, redness and headache — could be acute angle-closure glaucoma.
  • Eye trauma (cricket ball, fall, sharp injury) followed by vision loss.
  • A cataract that has “matured” — pupil looks white or grey — needs urgent surgery to prevent complications.

Call +91-77188-85245 — same-day urgent slots are reserved for retinal and cataract emergencies at Crystal Clear Eye Clinic, Andheri West.

4. Advanced Diagnosis at Crystal Clear Eye Clinic

A cataract diagnosis is not just “you have a cataract, let’s operate”. At Crystal Clear Eye Clinic on SV Road, Andheri West, your cataract evaluation is a comprehensive 45-minute process that determines not only the type and stage of cataract but also the perfect IOL power and the safest surgical approach for your individual eye.

Diagnostic Journey

Step 1 — Detailed Consultation

I personally review your symptoms, medical history (diabetes, hypertension, cardiac, steroid use), previous eye records, and lifestyle visual demands (do you drive at night? use a computer all day? read fine print?). This is done in English, Hindi, Gujarati, Marathi, Telugu or Chinese — your choice.

Step 2 — Vision & Refraction

Visual acuity, current glasses prescription, intra-ocular pressure (Goldmann Applanation Tonometry), slit-lamp biomicroscopy of the anterior segment, and dilated fundus evaluation of the retina and optic nerve.

Step 3 — Advanced Imaging

IOL Master / Optical Biometry (measures axial length & keratometry with micron precision), CSO Sirius+ Scheimpflug Tomography (maps your cornea, rules out keratoconus), OCT-Angiography (OCTA) of the macula, and Specular Microscopy (corneal endothelium health).

Step 4 — Diagnosis & IOL Plan

You receive a written diagnosis, IOL power recommendation, surgical plan, alternatives, risks, and a transparent cost estimate — all explained in plain language with your own scans on screen.

Most reports are ready within 15 minutes of completing your scans, and you walk out of Crystal Clear Eye Clinic the same day with a complete surgical plan in hand. Located on SV Road, Andheri West, the clinic serves patients from Versova, Oshiwara, Four Bungalows, Lokhandwala, Juhu, Vile Parle, Jogeshwari and Goregaon. View the complete list of services on the Crystal Clear Eye services page or Dr. Jignesh Gala services page.

5. Treatment Options by Dr. Jignesh Gala

There are no eye drops, tablets, exercises or home remedies that can reverse a cataract — surgery is the only effective treatment. However, there are several types of cataract surgery, and the right choice depends on the density of your cataract, your visual lifestyle, and your budget. At Crystal Clear Eye Clinic, Andheri West, I perform the entire spectrum.

Cataract Surgery Options

Type of SurgeryIncisionAnaesthesiaBest ForRecovery
Topical Phacoemulsification (my standard)2.2 mm, no stitchDrops only (no injection)90% of cataracts24–48 hrs
Femtosecond Laser Cataract Surgery (FLACS)Laser-created, bladelessDrops onlyDense cataract, premium IOL, weak zonules24–48 hrs

Combined Phaco + Vitrectomy2.2 mm + 27G vitrectomyInjection / dropsCataract + vitreous haemorrhage / RD2–4 weeks

Intraocular Lens (IOL) Options

  • Monofocal IOL — sharp distance vision; reading glasses needed. Most affordable. Examples: Alcon AcrySof IQ, J&J Tecnis 1, Zeiss Asphina.
  • Multifocal IOL — sharp near, intermediate & distance; most patients spectacle-free. Examples: Alcon PanOptix (trifocal), Zeiss AT LISA tri.
  • EDOF IOL (Extended Depth of Focus) — smooth continuous range from distance to computer distance, minimal halos. Examples: J&J Tecnis Symfony, Alcon Vivity.
  • Toric IOL — corrects astigmatism; available as monofocal, multifocal or EDOF toric.
  • Light-Adjustable IOL (LAL) — power can be fine-tuned with UV light after surgery; the only IOL that lets you “test drive” vision before locking.
  • Scleral-Fixated / Iris-Fixated IOL — for eyes with damaged or absent capsule (trauma, prior surgery).

Why Dr. Jignesh Gala’s Approach Is Superior

  • Single-surgeon continuity — I am your consultant, surgeon, and post-op doctor. No juniors, no rotation.
  • Topical anaesthesia — no injection, no stitch, no patch. Walk-in, walk-out.
  • Bausch + Lomb Stellaris & Alcon LEGION phaco platforms — among the safest, most energy-efficient systems globally.
  • CSO Sirius+ tomography + IOL Master biometry — IOL power calculation accurate to 0.25 D.
  • 4,000+ phacoemulsification cases — surgical experience that handles complications before they happen.
  • Honest IOL counselling — I recommend the IOL that fits your lifestyle, not the one with the highest margin.

Procedure Steps (Phacoemulsification)

  1. Dilating drops instilled; topical anaesthetic drops applied (no injection).
  2. 2.2 mm self-sealing corneal incision created (no stitch, no blade in FLACS).
  3. Circular capsulorhexis (5–5.5 mm) made in the lens capsule.
  4. Phaco probe emulsifies the cloudy lens into fragments using ultrasound; fragments aspirated.
  5. Folded IOL injected through the same 2.2 mm incision; unfolds inside the capsular bag.
  6. Incision self-seals; no stitch, no patch. Procedure complete in 10–15 minutes.

According to the EyeWiki (AAO) Phacoemulsification chapter and a comprehensive review in the American Academy of Ophthalmology Journal on modern cataract outcomes, modern phacoemulsification carries a success rate of over 98% with a complication rate below 2% when performed by an experienced surgeon. My personal outcomes are consistent with these international benchmarks. Read more about my cataract services on the Crystal Clear Eye cataract page or the Dr. Jignesh Gala cataract page.

6. Why Choose Crystal Clear Eye Clinic for Cataract Surgery?

There is no shortage of eye hospitals in Mumbai. But when you are choosing where to undergo cataract surgery — surgery on your one pair of eyes — the differences between a chain hospital and a single-surgeon boutique clinic matter enormously. Below is an honest breakdown of why thousands of patients from Andheri West, Juhu, Vile Parle, Jogeshwari, Goregaon, Santacruz, Khar, Bandra and Powai have chosen Crystal Clear Eye Clinic over the big chains.

Technology Advantage

My clinic is equipped with the same generation of technology as India’s top eye institutes — Bausch + Lomb Stellaris & Alcon LEGION phaco platforms, SCHWIND AMARIS excimer laser (Germany), CSO Sirius+ Scheimpflug tomographer, Retikare Zeal vitrectomy system, OCT-Angiography, Goldmann Applanation Tonometry, IOL Master / Biometry, YAG Laser and Green Laser. There is no “older machine” hiding in a back room — every patient is operated on the same flagship equipment.

Experience Advantage

I have personally performed 25,000+ total eye procedures and 4,000+ cataract phacoemulsification surgeries, including complex traumatic, paediatric, mature and combined cases. Few individual surgeons in Andheri West can match this volume. I have also trained at L V Prasad Eye Institute, Tan Tock Seng Hospital Singapore, and as Assistant Professor at TNMC & BYL Nair Hospital — exposure that very few Mumbai private practitioners have.

Personalized Care Philosophy

I believe “Vision is a right, not a privilege”. Every patient who walks into Crystal Clear Eye Clinic is examined, counselled, operated on, and followed up by me personally — not by a junior, not by a chain-hospital trainee, not by a rotating locum. This single-surgeon model dramatically reduces complications and ensures your IOL calculation, surgical plan and post-op refraction are all done by the same expert mind.

Cashless Insurance & EMI

Cataract is one of the most widely covered procedures in Indian mediclaim. At Crystal Clear Eye Clinic, I have 30+ cashless TPA / insurance tie-ups including Star Health, HDFC Ergo, ICICI Lombard, Bajaj Allianz, Niva Bupa, Aditya Birla, TATA AIG, Medi Assist, Vidal Health, Raksha TPA, CGHS, ESIC, Ayushman Bharat PMJAY and MJPJAY. EMI / financing options are available for premium IOL upgrades. Same-day discharge is standard.

Location Advantage — Convenience for All of Western Mumbai

Crystal Clear Eye Clinic is on SV Road (Swami Vivekanand Road), Andheri West, opposite Bhavan’s College and 2 minutes from Andheri Railway Station and Andheri Metro Station. The clinic is conveniently accessible for patients from Juhu, Vile Parle, Jogeshwari, Goregaon, Santacruz, Khar, Bandra, Andheri East and Powai. Walk-ins are welcome from DN Nagar, Lokhandwala, Oshiwara, Versova, Four Bungalows and Seven Bungalows. Read why patients choose us on the Why Choose Us page.

7. What to Expect Before, During & After Cataract Surgery

Most patients are anxious because they don’t know what to expect. Let me walk you through the entire journey — from the day before surgery to one month after — so you walk into Crystal Clear Eye Clinic fully informed.

Pre-Operative Preparation

  • Fasting: Light breakfast on the morning of surgery is permitted for topical-anaesthesia cases (4-hour fasting only if sedation is planned).
  • Medications: Continue BP, thyroid and cardiac medicines as usual. Blood thinners (aspirin, clopidogrel) are NOT stopped — modern phaco is bloodless.
  • Eye drops: Start antibiotic + NSAID drops as prescribed, usually 1 day before surgery.
  • Contact lenses: Remove soft lenses 1 week before biometry; RGP lenses 2 weeks before.
  • Clothing: Wear comfortable, front-button clothing. Bring sunglasses for the ride home.
  • Attendant: Every patient must be accompanied by one responsible adult. You will not be allowed to drive yourself home.

During the Procedure

On arrival, dilating drops are instilled and you wait in the pre-op area for about 30 minutes. In the OT, you lie down on a comfortable surgical chair. Topical anaesthetic drops are applied — no injection, no patch. You may feel mild pressure and see bright lights, but there is no pain. The actual phacoemulsification takes 10–15 minutes; femtosecond laser adds another 10 minutes. Throughout the procedure I talk to you in your preferred language — English, Hindi, Gujarati, Marathi, Telugu or Chinese — so you stay calm and informed.

Post-Operative Recovery Timeline

Day 1

Eye may feel scratchy & watery. Vision already clearer than before surgery in most cases. First review at the clinic. Drops started. Protective shield at night.

Week 1

9. Patient Success Stories & Reviews

Below are anonymised summaries of real cataract patients I have treated at Crystal Clear Eye Clinic, Andheri West. Names have been changed to protect privacy; clinical details are accurate. These stories reflect the kind of outcomes that have earned me consistent 5-star reviews on Google and Practo.

Priya R., 52 — from Lokhandwala

“Software architect, hates glasses. Dr. Gala implanted Alcon PanOptix trifocal IOL in both eyes. Today I read code on my laptop, drive at night, and read bedtime stories to my granddaughter — all without glasses. Walked into his SV Road clinic from Lokhandwala in 15 minutes.”

Ashok M., 68 — from Versova

“Delayed cataract surgery for 3 years until vision was just light perception. Dr. Gala operated on a dense white mature cataract with phaco in 18 minutes — painless, no injection, no stitch. Next morning I could read the newspaper. The Versova to Andheri West trip was worth every minute.”

Saroj K., 92 — from Four Bungalows

“My grandmother has pseudoexfoliation and a weak lens capsule. Every surgeon said high-risk. Dr. Gala used a capsular tension ring and finished phaco flawlessly. Vision is 6/9 today. We live near Four Bungalows — his clinic is the closest serious eye centre on SV Road.”

Aarav S., 8 — from Bandra West

“Cricket ball injury at school, traumatic cataract at age 8. Dr. Gala did phaco-aspiration with primary posterior capsulorhexis and anterior vitrectomy. Aarav is now 12 with 6/6 vision in his operated eye. Family travelled from Bandra to Andheri West — would do it again.”

Rajesh T., 58 — from Vile Parle

“Diabetic with posterior subcapsular cataract. Glare while driving was unbearable. Dr. Gala operated with topical drops only — I watched the whole surgery on the monitor. Cashless through Star Health, zero out-of-pocket except the EDOF upgrade. Highly recommend to anyone in Vile Parle / Juhu area.”

Vinod P., 100 — from Goregaon

“My grandfather is 100. Dr. Gala was the only surgeon in Mumbai who agreed to operate. Topical anaesthesia, 12-minute phaco, monofocal IOL. He reads the newspaper today at 101. A family friend recommended Crystal Clear Eye Clinic — we drove from Goregaon, took 30 minutes.”

Patients consistently rate Crystal Clear Eye Clinic 5 stars for surgeon expertise, painless experience, transparent pricing and warm multi-language counselling. Read more on the Crystal Clear Eye testimonials page or the Dr. Jignesh Gala testimonials page.

Every patient is examined, counselled and operated on by me personally. The same surgeon who calculates your IOL power also reviews your 1-month refraction. This model dramatically reduces complications and improves outcomes.

8. Does Dr. Jignesh Gala speak Gujarati / Marathi / Hindi?

Yes — and more. I consult in English, Hindi, Gujarati, Marathi, Telugu and Chinese. This is rare in Mumbai and is one of the reasons patients from diverse communities across Andheri West, Juhu, Vile Parle, Bandra and Powai choose Crystal Clear Eye Clinic.

9. Where is Crystal Clear Eye Clinic located in Andheri?

Crystal Clear Eye Clinic is at Laram Centre, A1-202, Swami Vivekanand Road (SV Road), above Sunil Jewellers, near NADCO Shopping Centre, Railway Colony, Andheri West, Mumbai 400058. It is a 2-minute walk from Andheri Railway Station (Western Line) and Andheri Metro Station (Line 1).

10. How do I reach the clinic from Andheri Railway Station?

Auto-rickshaws are readily available from DN Nagar, Lokhandwala, Versova, Oshiwara, Four Bungalows and Seven Bungalows. Parking is available on SV Road opposite Bhavan’s College.

11. Do you treat patients from Juhu, Vile Parle and Goregaon?

Absolutely. My catchment includes the entire western Mumbai corridor — Juhu, Vile Parle, Santacruz, Khar, Bandra, Jogeshwari, Goregaon, Malad, Andheri East, Powai — and beyond. Outstation patients from Thane, Navi Mumbai, Pune, Surat, Vadodara and Ahmedabad also visit regularly. My team coordinates travel and stay on request.

If you or a parent has been told they have a cataract — or if you have noticed any of the symptoms listed in Section 3 — please don’t delay.
